General Information about the Nominating Committee and Running for Elected Office at Saint Andrew's-in-the-Valley
January 12, 2012
With the Annual Meeting coming up, it is timely to clarify a couple of things about how things work when it comes to running for an elected parish office. The role of the Nominating Committee (which is composed of the current wardens, any out-going vestry members, an elected member of the congregation, and the rector) is to think carefully and prayerfully about what gifts and skills are needed on the Vestry and our Convocation Delegation, to invite and encourage nominations from the parish in the fall, and then to put together a slate to present at our Annual Meeting. We have tended to prefer to avoid contested elections. If, after an initial slate has been established, there are still unfilled positions, the Nominating Committee will extend another round of invitations to nominate.
This is the point at which we are now. Currently, there is one Vestry position for which we have no nomination. If you would like to nominate someone (yourself included), please contact Sally DeGroot (986-1276) who is the chair of the committee. We have found that actual “nominations from the floor” at the Annual Meeting can lead to awkwardness: An individual may feel unduly pressured while everyone waits to see if they will accept. An individual may not actually be eligible for some reason, and that, too, can be uncomfortable. So…any nomination made after the official “slate” has been published will constitute a “nomination from the floor.”
For the record, expectations of those who stand for nomination are as follows: One must be an active member of the parish (indicated by regular, faithful attendance and pledging), membership must be recorded in the Register of Members book in the office (by having been baptized or confirmed at Saint Andrew’s, by having had ones baptismal record and membership officially transferred from a previous parish, or “by request,” accompanied by ones date and place of baptism). Only nominees for junior or senior warden require one to have been received into or confirmed in the Episcopal Church. (If you would like to be baptized, confirmed, received, or officially registered in our register, or have questions about membership, please talk to the rector.)
The Vestry, together with the rector, is the decision-making body of this church, with our decisions guided by the work of committees and their recommendations. Vestry members serve two-year terms, renewable up to four years. We meet once a month for two hours, currently on a Thursday evening, and attendance is expected, as is attendance at an annual Vestry retreat. It is assumed that Vestry members will be active in at least one, if not several, committees and activities of the church in addition to regular Sunday worship.
If you are curious about Vestry meetings, they are open to everyone, though please check with the rector or warden in advance. Serving on the Vestry is more than an administrative job. It is a way in which we grow more deeply in our relationships with each other and with God, and where we are encouraged to grow in our ability to listen to the Spirit in each other, in the parish, and in our lives. We try to have the Vestry membership reflect the diversity of our parish and we welcome everyone’s input into the process.
